Try this easy homemade raw vegan hemp milk recipe. Hemp seeds are an ideal superfood for a raw food or vegan diet due to their high protein and essential fatty acid content. This quick and easy recipe for a raw food hemp milk made from hemp seeds can be used over a bowl of fruit, in smoothies and shakes, or enjoyed on its own, just like regular dairy milk or any of your other favorite non-dairy milk substitutes such as soy milk or almond milk.

You can omit the vanilla and sweetener if you prefer an even more nutritious beverage, but the strong flavor of the seeds can be a bit overpowering for some. It’s a bit of an earthy flavor, even for vegans used to drinking different kinds of non-dairy milk substitutes.

Benefits of Hemp Milk

I talk about hemp seeds a lot as being one of the most nutritious foods available, especially for those that eat a plant-based diet.

Hemp seeds contain a perfect balance of omega-3, 6 and 9 and not only are they high in omega-3 fatty acids but they also contain magnesium, an essential mineral for metabolizing fats.

Hemp seeds are also rich in iron, zinc and free radical-fighting antioxidants such as vitamin E. Zinc plays a roll in prostrate health and testosterone production, iron is important in red blood cell production and vitamin E helps protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals.

Thanks to all that, hemp seeds have an anti-inflammatory effect in the body making them especially great for athletes or anyone struggling with an inflammatory condition. They are also a wonderful source of complete plant-based protein.

Equipment Needed for Hemp Milk

All you need to make quick and easy homemade hemp milk is:

  • Blender. I would recommend a Vitamix but any blender works. A high-speed blender will always give the best results but hemp seeds are soft and blend easily, so you can make this in a regular blender as well.
  • Storage container. I like mason jars with these plastic lids or Weck jars to store the milk but any glass container works great.

That’s it! You do have the option to strain it through a nut milk bag but I really don’t think it makes much of a difference.

Hemp Seed Milk FAQ

How should I store hemp seed milk?

Hemp milk can be stored in a container in the fridge for up to 5 days, maybe longer. Just give it good shake before use as it will separate after sitting.

How can I sweeten hemp milk?

To enhance the earthy, nutty flavour of hemp seeds, I like to add 3 small dates to my hemp seed milk, however, sweetener is optional. You can also use maple syrup, agave or for a sugar-free option, stevia or monk fruit sweetener.

Can you heat hemp seed milk?

Yes, hemp milk can be heated. Try it in a homemade latte! You can see it frothed in a homemade matcha latte in the photo below. I use the Milk Cafe Brother from Breville, which I love, by the way, and it frothed up the hemp seed milk beautifully.

It can also be frothed cold and poured over an iced matcha!

Do you need to soak the hemp seeds?

Nope! You don’t need to soak the hemp seeds which is why hemp milk is so quick and easy! Just throw them in the blender with water, blend and enjoy!

Do you need to strain homemade hemp milk?

No, you do not need to strain hemp milk as it comes out very smooth just from blending. However, it does have a bit of a greenish, blackish tint to it. To get rid of the tiny green-black specks, you can run it through a nut milk bag if you like. There won’t be much left behind after straining but it does make it ever so slightly smoother.

What does hemp milk taste like?

Hemp milk definitely has a distinctive hemp seed flavour. I would describe it as earthy, nutty and slightly bitter. If you don’t like hemp seeds, you probably won’t like hemp seed milk. I think hemp milk really benefits from add-ins such as dates, vanilla and sea salt. They really elevate the taste and give it a wonderful flavour.

Hemp Milk Recipe

I’ve included a recipe below for homemade hemp seed milk. For the most basic milk, all you need is water and hemp seeds but I would recommend adding the optional flavour enhancers.

I use 3 cups of water which results in a creamier milk. You can add up to 4 cups to stretch it a bit further. It’s still nice and creamy with 4 cups of water so just play around to see what consistency you like the best.
